> Corporate workers who are either too afraid or lazy to go to the office are having a significant impact on the economy
I don't really owe my employer anything. To feel bad about waking up and sipping my coffee in the comfort of my own home 5 minutes before standup instead of commuting in traffic, not being compensated for it whilst also contributing to environmental pollution is incredibly strange.
Overall, this article sounds like it was written from some salty and unintelligible realestate investor drinking the corporate koolaid. It references some McKinsey "research" study and fails to even cite the source or what the analysis was outside of alluding to the layman being responsible for wiping out almost 1 trillion dollars.
Why do you (or your employer) owe a random corporate landlord anything?
A bunch of rich assholes bet that some assets would go up in value; they are likely going to lose that bet. That loss isn't anybody's "fault" besides the people who placed the bet.
The internet enables people to work from home where ever it is in the world, whatever time zone in the world. So unless you are a business owner who would rival Hitler or Mussolini in the control freak stakes, the business gets to offload the cost of housing and furnishing employees in an office back onto the employee. The smart employee working from home no longer has to look at purchasing a home in the staid commuter belt, but can choose from any location where the internet can reach, which thanks to Uncle Elon and his Starlink satellites is pretty much anywhere on this planet.
You want to spend a year living in Iceland, to help their economy, and experience life as an extreme petrolhead, you can do that. You want to camp out in an African village, living like a king on the exchange rate whilst helping to raise living standards by spending in the local economy, you can do that.
They say charity begins at home, why even restrict yourself to a 1st world country, funding corrupt politicians at national and local levels, go live somewhere else where the organic food cost pennies and everyone is happy because of the input you bring to those less developed parts of the world.
How quickly could you bring water to a village in Africa, if you decided to live there, knowing that Uncle Elon has your back with your Starlink internet connection?
Some businesses are behind the curve when it comes to selling up office blocks or reprovisioning them into homes as this news article from 2019 demonstrates.
