Ask HN: Post Modernism and Atomic Bombs
Talking very broadly, Modernism can be summarised as Truth and value through work (as long as you work hard and be honest, you'll do good - conversely, if you do well, it's automatically because you worked hard and are honest). This idea came about during the american civil war, and was the prevalent mode of thought in North America until - and here's the part I wasn't aware - the atomic bomb.
The reasoning is that if in an instant a city like Hiroshima can be wiped, and an empire put to their knees (it's debatable how much the bomb had to do with this or if it was real, but it was what was believed at the time.), what's the point of working hard?
Thsi brought around post-modernism and this idea that truth and value has to be whatever is right there, and nothing has intrisic value over any other thing.
I assume - if all this is not blatantly wrong, which it might be - that we're stuck in this weird hole since, and have not yet found a way out.
I find this very interesting - is this somewhat right? Anywhere I can look more into it?
