I feel like there's so much advocacy for being a good capitalist, for defusing urges to over engineer & over obsess. There is so much out there about being practical.
And just today, I was trying to communicate with a very practical minded friend, who I respect a lot, about how it just hurts me that the representation is all one way. The debate is so strongly phrased & oriented towards a capitalist efficiency, that the important thing is making money, and nothing else actually matters. It's so hard to even imagine what else anyone could say, what other cases might be built.
Dearly loving this article for serendipitously talking about, for being discourse on the real meta of work. Often the engineer is alone in being able to assess quality, and while many still have empathic managers or orgs that try to help them some, the strain of dissonance, of please can't we stop being so bad, is a huge tax, especially when shouldered alone.
(I also think software has many evolutions yet to go & most of them come from higher quality general systems research. The capitalist productions we've made so much money off are a local maxima, not a real optimum for what computing's better nature can be. Quality ought matter, & computing should be more holistic rather than being a couple dev team's mean to their yearly okr's end. But figuring out what sojurns forward are worth making is quite difficulty.)
