California grad student commutes to class by plane to save on rent

It's crazy that he could take ~250 flights for $2500 (other costs excluded): $10 a flight?

I was thinking this would have worked out even at $50-$100 a roundtrip with 12 trips a month (though probably not with rent in LA as it's not sufficiently cheaper than Bay Area).

One thing that's not commented on is the carbon footprint.
