The FDA and USDA have been handling this question on a case-by-case basis. The approvals announced today are both for the label “cell-cultivated chicken”.
I'm not sure synthetic is the right word for cells cultivated in a mold until they naturally adhere via cell adhesion.
synthetic: something resulting from synthesis rather than occurring naturally
seems like the ideal word. the meat is synthesized from cells rather than being grown
But it’s growing from the cells.
Hopefully there is some requirement. The idea of unwittingly eating “chicken” doesn’t sit well with me.
