Some DNS servers will resolve it (for now): https://dnspropagation.net/A/makemkv.com

You would need a way to hardwire the IP address.

makemkv.com 185.84.108.20

forum.makemkv.com 104.21.49.241

makemkv.com and sub sites seems to be down.

DNS for makemkv.com and forum.makemkv.com points to 127.0.0.1.

I think this is significant since this seems to be a very popular piece of software.

Anyone know if the project has been shutdown? If so why?

The domain is on hold/suspended based on SOA [1] The domain owner likely needs to log into their registrar and verify their information and/or pay some fee. More likely pay a fee based on registration expiration.
