The idea though, that you should like, kill people in order to create a sort of chaotic attention to those ideas -- still kinda frowned upon IMHO

Frowned upon? Maybe sure. Unpopular? US shooting stats say otherwise. The only thankful difference is we don’t have geniuses trying to plan these things.
His ideas weren't particularly marginal before. The notion that industrial civilization is fundamentally alienating has been around as long as industrial civilization.
