The cliche that in 1896, Parisians on the bleeding edge of public film exhibition ran screaming from the approaching train short subject "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat," appears to be partially apocryphal but what is well-established is all early films were short and sensationalist, designed to cause a stir and keep attention firmly focused on the new phenomenon. It took nearly 20 years for the feature-length film to be invented and become a standard form. So maybe by 2040 we'll look back and think of experiments like this as quaint and silly.
