Most everything always works initially. Which is why so many folks get blinded by success. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DY3KQX6 was a fun read on the general topic. Mayhap the book has been disproven? I would be interested in good followups.

Such that it will be hard for me to take any of these stories too "at face value." Tons of post-hoc justifications of choices that don't have a repeatable basis in confidence. Mostly assertions from the lucky ones that got in front of a wave, as it were.
