The UFO craze was created by the paradigm where the government constantly lies to the public, over-classifies information, and where we never know how far apart the public vs private conversations are from our key leaders. Moreover where everyone knows we're constantly being lied to though we may disagree about where and to what extent. The government isn't trusted because it's proven itself untrustworthy.

In that context we're left guessing. It could be true or not, we'd have no way of knowing. That's the problem with broken trust.

Not that you're wrong, but I think thats a misperception or misset expectation. Government lies and obscures, sure. So does everybody else. All the people who have come out and said the government(s) are hiding evidence of UFOs are also all lying. Everybody who says the government cooked the election, put tracking chips in COVID vaccines, are exaggerating climate change are all also lying. A lot of those same liars have used their platform to get themselves into the same government they claim is lying to everyone. It's an emergent property of human society and not a thing invented in Washington DC.

I don't really know what is actually going on, but I primarily want it to be true that the US has some crazy alien stuff because I'm finding the people who militantly try to disprove these people (instead of ignoring them? Since it is all pretty harmless discourse really) are more insufferable than the alien people themselves.

Ironically, this itself is a piece of incompetent journalism. Anyone looking for truthful answers should read Stanton Friedman's books. He is the real deal.

I'm not being hit with a paywall. I was hit with a popup to get me to subscribe was all.

Substack uses dark patterns in a pretty random way (different dark patterns modals on different blogs, often different dark pattern modals on the same blog at different times) to confuse people about the nature of the site. They'd rather you be confused or intimidated to sign up for something and try to make it very clear that you can read articles online and that your refusal to subscribe to a newsletter could be permanent and not just a "not yet" situation.

Unfortunately this is endemic to the industry. Try using Windows sometime. Oughta be a law that any "not yet" button for a thoroughly pizzled [1] product or service ought to have a "never" button next to it and the font size of never has to be 3x larger than the "not yet" and the contrast of "not yet" has to be less than the square root of the contrast on "never". That would be about fair.

At least on my side the pop-up isn’t a paywall, but just a nag. Clicking the (small, greyed out) “continue reading” option allowed me to read the rest of the article.

The UFO craze was enabled by people who don’t seem to want to be here (yes they would rather be anywhere else, how boring earth is) and will suspend disbelief for the hope of a different reality.
