It sounds like someone (from the article a single someone) went through and altered a bunch of articles, possibly after initial publication.

The article talks about journalistic standards but it sounds like they need some kind of security to ensure such silent modification isn’t possible.

Correct, although they just go by RNZ today, the term "radio" is quickly becoming outdated. They're a general digital news org, funded by the government.
