The classic NES and SNES are just linux boxes with emulators. We know this because you can hack them and change the emulator. Those devices wouldn't exist without the emulation community.
Does this mean that if the community's emulators were all GPLv3, that Nintendo either would have had to make those things way less locked down or implement their own emulator from scratch?
