That aside, "AI" has been open source from the beginning. Almost all of the meaningful models and research from the last 10 years are freely available, under real open source license. A better article would be that AI has discovered proprietary models with chatGPT, claude, et al.

Not quite. The underlying technology is open-source, but the specifics of the models of late (to say nothing of the tuned parameters) are not. Just because the core of the architecture - or even the tooling used to build it - is open source does not make the result open source. That would be akin to saying anything compiled with LLVM and using well-known algorithms is Open Source.
