These are some of the lighter and less upsetting parts, without delving into the truly nasty and ugly bits like covering up an/or turning blind eyes to sexual abuse at the hands of Church authority figures (and parents). Officially, it's not acceptable. But in reality, on the other hand, it turns out it's uncomfortable to confront such matters. Easier to pretend everything is business as usual.
It seems like hyperbole to describe such books as "banned" in any meaningful sense of the word.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult doesn't provide any help, that is, I can't find mention of "two kinds of cults", though I can find mention of three kinds:
> Campbell, describing cults as non-traditional religious groups based on belief in a divine element in the individual, brings two major types of such to attention – mystical and instrumental – dividing cults into either occult or metaphysical assembly. There is also a third type, the service-oriented, ...
I don't believe that's at all what you mean.
The Bible contains some pretty age-inappropriate content for elementary school students, right? I mean, there's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bible_and_violence , which requires serious study to comprehend in context. Not something a 3rd grader will know.
When should kids learn that it was once okay to stone an girl who was not a virgin? (Deuteronomy 22:20–21), or in Genesis 19, what the men of Sodom wanted to do the visiting angels, or why Lot offered the men his two virgin daughters instead ('do to them as you please'). Was the violent rape of guests the main problem, or the male homosexuality?
When my family read through the Bible together, when I was about 15 years old, those parts was awkward. Much more awkward than learning Heather Has Two Mommies. Even "Your breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle grazing among the lilies" was odd with my mother at the reading.
So, which cult is passing laws to restrict access to "pornographic or indecent" content from of elementary school students? And which cult isn't aware of what's actually in the Bible, so forgot to include a religion exception?
I think the same old things can be given new secular names, and people can end up doing the same things -- or even worse. Adopt a new identity! Get a new name! Make a blood sacrifice to the blood god!
Memes are tricky. They love irreversibility and they love to mark the body.
What kind of cult? Occult, literally hidden (try showing it). Blood and sex magic.
