If the mid tier one really has m.2 then it could be interesting. I’ve found that much of the perceived raspberry slowness is really lack of ssd rather than cpu

No need to wait. The same SoC has already been delivered to thousands of customers on two boards:

They took a little longer to ship than expected late last year, but I've got one of each.

The VisionFive 2 has an M.2 socket, the Star64 has a PCIe slot. Only 1 lane in each case, but you can approach 400 MB/s on either.
