How does it compare to a field-programmable analog array (FPAA)?

FPGAs, in their current form, are entirely digital logic (1s and 0s). The link GP posted is about analog logic.

The parent comment was referring to FPAAs, not FPGAs.

I think what that company (anabrid) does is exactly building an FPAA.

I'm not sure if it does exactly the same thing, but anyways it's used in modular synthesis to automate semi-random changes over time.

I built something similar (Chua's circuit) for an electronics course in college[1]. It was a lot of fun. While testing it, we couldn't get it to display the phase portraits on an oscilloscope for a long time, and then we realised we were using a modern "digital" oscilloscope. I think the (high but finite) sampling rate was not enough. The professor found an old analog one from the 80s in his lab and then we got the pretty phase portraits. This site was super helpful at that time (2016)[2]

When we did something similar we bought a really expensive NI DAQ for the same purpose.
