I think think that automated live-patching of the kernel is a great thing. The only downside is you'll sometimes have issues like this, where some library or app can't work with the newer kernel. I think that with enough people live-updating their kernels, eventually distro vendors will get smarter about how they do updates, and they'll test common software against the kernel before pushing out the patch.
