An Apple Headset Is Coming. Can It Be More Than a Nerd Helmet?

That’s assuming it’s physically large. As it gets smaller, it becomes more of a general purpose AR device that can overlay any context, information, or visual transformation onto your environment and allow physical-digital interaction and social experiences. First gen should in theory be that too, but in practice if it does look too big then people won’t use it in that manner as much as they use it as a panoramic monitor. Nonetheless it will start the flywheel of AR development and technology in the Apple ecosystem to lay the groundwork for mass adoption.
Apple can also use AR to lure people away from Windows and PCs, since the glasses presumably can be used as a souped up Mac. But since Apple is an ecosystem provider, they need to have world class AI in-house, if not now then at some point (otherwise competitor’s AR devices will be more feature complete in an important way). That’s not impossible given Apple’s cash pile, but it is something they’ll need to develop new capabilities around and dedicate resources to.
Effort: Expensive, needs energy (a lot it's a display, needs to track things), needs to be weared, breaks your outfit (makeup hair)
Benefit: ?
I can see people sitting on a couch or in the bed with switch like controllers but
This is just talking of the “panoramic monitor” capability, without getting into more AR-native features which will become increasingly important and be more impactful.
Most people lug it around comfortable in a backpack.
And what ar features would you want to use?
Navigation in the car perhaps but even than I would put in a cheap car display in because I don't want to wear something on my face
It's going to be harder for apple to do it with VR or AR tech, but it is possible. It probably won't catch on until Gen 3-4 once the ecosystem is up to speed, consumer price drops, and the true function emerges beyond perceived hype.
This is without even getting into the obvious of BlackBerry.
Alone from a pure beauty standpoint this would mean destroying your hair and makeup for what?
Probably not for a selfie
And yes the imagination of suddenly people sitting with not just some vr glasses from anyone but apple ones on a couch isolated from reality oh boy.
Yes sir!
Did you see any thing?!
No sir, I didn't see you playing with your dolls again!
It's not as if my sartorial elegance is anything to write home about anyway :)
Am I the only one who considers that a compliment?
