It can certainly make up things that look like citations. It definitely cannot produce a series of valid inline citations for specific quotes, rephrasings, or statistics.
It sometimes can if it has those books in it's training set. But it won't tell you it doesn't know, it will hallucinate a citation that doesn't exist.

Maybe but I've had ChatGPT tell me it doesn't know many things.
GPT-4 with browsing-mode enabled (beta) does present citations to real sources, with clickable links.
Why do you think it can't do that?
It can also give me quotes from Martians, but that doesn't mean Martians or what they or the average Venusian had to say on a topic true.
