I cannot say much as to the numbers in the article, but it is obvious to me that the use of AI will increase the overall energy use of computing. What's more interesting, I think, is revisiting the customary reasoning in the technology sector: "people are expensive, compute power is cheap". Actually computing also has costs in terms of externalities beyond the energy used, notably the CO2 emissions associated with energy consumption, as well as those associated with the manufacturing process for the computing machines. Other costs I can think of are societal costs stemming from the jobs people might lose once use of AI becomes widespread.
I think it's time we explored the true costs to our species. Maybe in the end people are not that expensive after all if you consider the alternative.
