Vicious Traps

They are saying that three undesirable traits are each the sums of two desirable traits: stubbornness is patience plus confidence, impulsiveness is curiosity plus boldness, and arrogance is humility plus ambition.

For brevity consider only impulsiveness, or impulsivity as it's normally called. Impulsivity may be considered a personality trait, but it also results from acquired brain injuries, dementia, or fetal alcohol syndrome. It doesn't suggest to me that those latter causes are adding multiple desirable personality traits which are combining to form an undesirable trait.
