Grafbase is now in public beta

so i actually have an app which I’m working on with data-heavy backend, so this touches on a problem that is very close to me. my pain points: 1. performance (query response times can be a pain and optimizing them takes a lot of time and trial and error) 2. availability (specifically in deployment pipelines) 3. developer experience (i haven't played with it much, but the interface is great) 4. data management (a big one for me - we have lots of data sources and need to make sure to sync them etc.), few good tools for that out there, especially for raw, disorganized data
what i like about it: 1. real time data sync 2. the documentation is FANTASTIC (this is so important for custom APIs and a very rare find) 3. price (not much to say here, 10 dollars is incredible compared to competitors)
what i don't like about it: 1. too few integrations at the moment
Glad to hear you like our documentation as it's something we're working hard to improve daily.
What integrations would you like to see? Our public roadmap is available here where you can upvote missing features: https://grafbase.com/roadmap
There are many architectural differences, but most importantly WunderGraph is Open Source (Apache 2.0 & MIT) and can run anywhere. It's a simple docker container. We're local first, and you can run WG offline.
Our focus is really enterprise API Integration. Most of our customers are small to large teams that have to integrate a lot of REST & GraphQL APIs. We could have never built such a vibrant open source community if you couldn't run WG in a private network.
Another big difference is configuration. A few years ago I did some experiments to configure the predecessor of WunderGraph using just GraphQL syntax. I think GraphQL is great, but ultimately has limitations in terms of what it's good for. After these experiments, we've decided to have all configuration in TypeScript and never looked back.
That said, I'd like to congratulate Grafbase to the public beta. I think Grafbase and WunderGraph can actually work together nicely. As Grafbase exposes a GraphQL API, you can easily plug that into WG and get the best of both tools.
Ultimately, it's great so see more and more solutions in the GraphQL segment. We need to make GraphQL & APIs easier and more accessible. Competition will force everyone to improve and push the boundaries. For a very long time, there were very limited options in this market. It's getting much better these days. The big winner will be the user who gets to chose better options.
From a product perspective Grafbase offers a serverless, realtime GraphQL API deployed at the edge. Our goal is to provide a unified data layer on top of existing APIs and databases.
The Grafbase platform itself is built in Rust and deployed to the edge using WebAssembly. Every GraphQL endpoint is deployed to V8 isolates at the edge which translates to very low cold starts and extremely fast performance globally.
Our branching feature makes collaboration seamless with your team. Just created a Git branch and push it up to create an instant preview branch that is totally isolated from production.
The Grafbase CLI is open source and available on GitHub: https://github.com/grafbase/grafbase. We are planning to open source the GraphQL gateway itself later this year.
Stay tuned for end-to-end type safety with TypeScript configuration.
