This kind of reinforces my desire to turn off all emergency alerts, including presidential. So did years of Amber Alerts for kids that were being looked for 100s of miles away.

To be fair, I was already preconditioned to avoid alerts by years of loud+pointless+daily Red Flag Warnings by NOAA.

One of my 'setup steps' when I got my first android phone some years back was to disable as many of the "emergency alerts" as it would allow me to disable. I could disable everything but the 'presidential alerts'. They remain off to this day, and this NYTimes article is one of the reasons why they are all off.

You can disable presidential alerts on most rooted phones.

I have to regularly re-disable alerts because I get a new sim every couple of months - apparently that re-enables them.
