BYD seems to be the only EV maker of sufficient scale that could compete with Tesla on unit cost.

What would it take to bring something like this to the US? Is it just not road legal (safety wise) to meet North American standards? I'd pay a 50% (or more) premium to get it here.

I recall reading a story last year about a guy who went through this process to import a cheap EV pickup to use around his farm[1]. I believe it cost him about $3k-4k in shipping and fees.

The pickup in this link is not legal (neither as automobile like normal cars/pickups nor as non-motor vehicles like bicycles/electric-bicycles) in China, too. But the BYD one is totally legal in China.

Not road legal. Youd need the manufacturer to do all that paperwork+engineering.

People have imported cheap Chinese evs for farm or questionably legal neighborhood ev usage.

what sort of extra engineering is required to make it road legal? I assume paperwork is really just certification to prove it meets existing regulations, but if the car requires "extra" engineering, then that's a big problem isnt it?

The car is probably made to security standards of the markets it's aiming for, and some places (like China) have weaker standards than US/Europe. If BYD planned to sell the model in US/Europe, then they would've engineered it to meet their security standards and just need to do "the paperwork" of submitting a few cars for (crash-)testing to satisfy the authorities.

190mi (305km) range for the base price and optional 252mi (405km) is pretty impressive. Reports seem to conflict on whether it is a sodium-ion or LiFePo battery.

For city use sure, otherwise looks like a death-trap when compared with standard US vehicle sizes and mass...

Why would you say "death trap" if its cheap? Do you only get safety unless the car is $100k ?
