This is a lot of personal information required to delete an account.

But I'm not sure what other way can be used to verify that original owner wants to delete an account (with paid purchases) and not some hacker (who may have obtained a password or 2FA token without permission).

Keeping in mind that if the original owner gets an account deleted without permission, the owner could sue Epic.

Well said. Normally I would be against collection of this sort of data but this all seems completely reasonable for a case like this. The way I see it, if you have an account with paid purchases on it you've already given up most of this or all of this info already, so at this point it hardly infringing on your privacy and more than it already has been.

This is more than it takes to cancel my account at my bank. Personally, I would already fail at the question of past connected playstation accounts, because my PSN name was random gibberish and I sold it on a forum years ago.

I don’t see why this should remove me from my right to delete my epic account.

I had an xbox live ultimate account I made during the pandemic.

xbox announced a partnership with EA so that people who had ultimate got access to EA games. OF course the trick is that it links your xbox account with an EAplay account.

Except it wouldn't work. It said I already had an eaplay account. I didn't recall making one but maybe I did a long time ago with that email. I couldn't get it to recover the password. I messaged EA to ask them to delete the ea account so I could make a new one and they said not unless I knew the password of the old one - of course I didn't that was the whole point. I asked them to send a password reset to the associated email and since it was through the xbox thing it wouldn't work. I messaged xbox to ask them what I should do and they didn't know - it was EAs problem not theirs.

So basically the EA partnership thing never worked for me and I never got to play any of their games. It was sort of the beginning of the end of using that service for me as the whole thing was frustrating. I don't think I ever made an EA play account ever, so my assumption is that my email (which has appeared on lists from compromised sites before) was used to try to see if someone could steal my games from EA or something and it ended up putting any account in limbo.

Truthfully I'm sort of ok with it now - I wouldn't give EA my money willingly so being forced away from their games is not that big a sacrifice.

Looks like they don't so that in the EU, probably because it'd be illegal. I recently deleted my account and the process was fairly painless, just a click of a button and a 30 day wait.

Edit: Just a note though, I had no money or purchases in the account, and I don't know if that affects the process.

I wonder what the story is behind why this process was put in place. I bet it’s a doozie.

According to the Reddit thread, some sore losers in Fortnite matches had the winners' accounts falsely deleted.
