Ask HN: What are some of the best ChatGPT Clients out there?

Likely similar to many of you, I have been using ChatGPT quite a bit lately. My main gripe with it though is that the actual interface is quite limited, and I don't like having to navigate to the site every time I want to use it.

Given the above, I've been looking in to a good ChatGPT client that offers additional functionality (exporting chats for example). There were quite a few out there, but I was curious what the community was using?

I am currently using Windows, however it would be awesome to hear what the community thinks of the best clients for any given platform!

To start things off, here is some I've found * lencx/ChatGPT (Windows, MacOS, Linux) * lisiur/ChatWizard (Windows, MacOS, Linux). * EasyChat AI (Windows) * Machato (Mac) * ChatHub (Chrome / Edge)

I recently made a VS Code extension for this, basically you use VS Code's Notebooks as the chat substrate. The benefit with this is you can edit both sides (actually all three sides, including "system") of the conversation to better tune the agent's responses.

The notebook format on disk is simple JSON that can easily be consumed by other code, supports version control, parameters like temp/etc.

It even has experimental (initial) support for LLaMa/other local models. And it can run the remote models (GPT-*) on web (https://vscode.dev / https://github.dev)!

Search "LLM Book" in vscode extension page or just follow the link: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=jaaxxx.l...

(Technically not "ChatGPT" as it's the paid API powered model, but this way is far more powerful in my experience and you pay pennies. That said the endpoint can be configured to talk to any OpenAI-like endpoint.)

Happy to talk issues/feature requests at https://github.com/JacksonKearl/ai-book

This is exactly what I've been looking for, thanks!

CLI: https://github.com/npiv/chatblade

For quick and easy, I like https://www.chatbotui.com

Plug in your API key and start chatting. Chats are stored in your browser. You can also run it locally, if you wish. https://github.com/mckaywrigley/chatbot-ui

For web i use -> https://www.chatbotui.com (has exports, and custom prompts)

For CLI -> https://github.com/lennardv2/hey-chatgpt-cli

I've been using Quora's Poe. There's a universal iOS and Mac OS app as well as a web interface all synced, also has other AIs other than ChatGPT to quickly switch and compare outputs. I actually find that ChatGPT isn't the most useful for giving me a lot of my answers.

Poe also has a community feature so you can share and see each others queries and AI responses and share links to non Poe users.

Haven't found any other app that isn't just a simple chat window with zero other features other than Poe, would love to try others that add value over OpenAI's web interface.

No digg on your response, but I wouldnt touch anything Quora...

You may not recall how Quora came up around these parts, but there was a lot of hubbub around how poorly they were using user-data years back, and golly, the village just up an ran 'em outta town.

Quora had a lot of promise, and then one day they started abusing user-data and privacy, and got all smug and pompous and a lot of people, myself, included, deleted accounts and never looked back.

Quora was, for a fleeting moment, that golden child of SV, but they got too bigg in the head, and thought other people wouldnt notice.

ick.

TypingMind is quite good. There's a MacOS wrapper, or you could wrap it into an executable for Windows yourself.

I built https://chitty-app.com/, which is a free client for MacOS (available via the App Store). It supports GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 in a simple iMessage-like UI.

Chitty also allows you to create custom assistants. It comes pre-loaded with Abraham Lincoln, Alan Turing, Jane Austen, etc., but you it's easy to add your own. I added myself as a custom assistant, which allows for ultimate rubber ducking :D

The app supports streaming responses and markdown (incl. multi-line code blocks).

So far, I'm loving Chat Box. https://github.com/Bin-Huang/chatbox

> My main gripe with it though is that the actual interface is quite limited, and I don't like having to navigate to the site every time I want to use it.

https://github.com/rikhuijzer/ata. Written in Rust. Does streaming responses and supports Emacs keyboard shortcuts. That's it. All that's needed for quickly looking up things.

Not sure if it's exactly what you're going for, but on Apple platforms, I really like Federico Viticci's S-GPT: https://www.macstories.net/ios/introducing-s-gpt-a-shortcut-...

I created a one page client in python and tkinter for GPT-3.5. ok I had chatgpt write most of it.

It's nothing special but it logs the conversations and allows for back and forth and multiline inputs.

I don't think it's a bad starting point if you want something to expand on.

>>* ok I had chatgpt write most of it.*

Can you please do a write up this...

Or at least a little tutorial or something, for ~~great justice~~ posterity?

Are there any projects that are targeting enterprise/business use cases? I would love to have:

  - a ChatGPT web ui (like chatbot-ui),
  - but server side and (self-)hosted
  - and with our own SSO auth.
  - Bonus points for including Azure OpenAI endpoint connectivity + auditing/logging by user.

How about native windows/mac/ios apps instead of web?

Not my stuff but maybe in a few weeks as there's some additional concepts involved.

Whats up with this typo?

How could it mangle an input such as shown on the git?

AskYourPdf is a great AI tool that turns your document into a chat interface allowing you to ask questions and receive answers from the content of your document.

It saves and allows you to export your chats. Its a great tool for those who work with documents frequently.

I use https://github.com/karthink/gptel to talk to GPT in Emacs and, by extension, have a record of all my conversations (unless intentionally removed) as simple Org files in my single Org-Roam network.

Do you know how it compares to https://github.com/xenodium/chatgpt-shell ?

That's the one I currently use.

I started with Poe which I still us on my iPhone but have been trying MacGPT[0]. I really like the minimal interface and mac-wide shortcut key but the input is very laggy. Could be my older Mac.

Best i have found is https://www.macgpt.com/

I'm a fan of open book ai on iOS. Feels a lot like the polished web interface with edits and what not
