It's never a bad idea to learn how the stock market works and how political/social/economic/etc... changes affect stock prices.

While I don't agree with your first point, it's certainly up do personal opinion. However, it's never a bad idea for people to understand how to invest and manage their money. From my understanding, that was what the author was talking about.
