The twitter play was a mistake but was too arrogant/foolish to admit it. He did attempt to cancel his bid but it was too late. He would have been better off to pay the penalty of a few billion and call it a day.
I'm not fond of his antics and trolling, but I am thankful he gathered up the right folks and took the insane risks to get SpaceX off the ground. It's easier to respect the guy when you focus on what he did right instead of wrong.
Would the world have been better without him? Not a chance.....
Especially with regard to NPR, this kind of misunderstanding is not limited to Musk, unfortunately.
I do wonder if it comes from the traditional corporate mindset: If you pay money for it to exist, you ought to have line-item control over it.
