Rust Trademark Policy Comment Form

"The Project would like the word Rust in a crate name to imply ownership by the Project. You should generally use ‘-rs’ instead in this situation. Please see “Use of the marks in toolchains or other software for use with Rust” section."
Did they check crates.io before making this decision?
It looks like there are thousands of crates that have "rust" in the name:
Note that the search you linked also includes crates that only have "rust" in the description or readme, not just the crate name -- that is why it shows a much higher count.
It is still thousands of crates and the idea itself seems ridiculuous.
Imagine if Oracle tried to do the same with Java and said "any jars that have 'Java' in the name violate our trademark and will need to be renamed.
It seems like over-reach and out of line with the spirit of the Rust community.
It's strict, like the language. Won't compile till you fix all errors.
But the possibility that you can be sued, I guess that is what the community is so harsh about. They should rewrite the policy, so that even a 5 year old can't be sued, imho.
But the crate-name is often the same name as the git repo or project-name in general, which exists outside crates.io and will benefit from a language-disambiguation.
This is still a stupid decision.
The possibility of lawsuits and licensing fees for crates, projects, etc. that have been in use for years is a big part of the worry.
It goes against the spirit of good will that the Rust community is known for and has a 'bait and switch' feel to some people.
