‘The Green Knight’ Movie Review (2021)

I usually love this kind of movie. I am a Joseph Campbell fan. I enjoy allegory and metaphor in films.

But this movie sucked. The guy who made it plainly does not understand the Green Knight story, and turned it into some anti-hero bullshit to, what, make morally sick people feel better about themselves? I'm not sure.

Gawain was one of the greatest knights. He was a rockstar. But in this movie he's not particularly skilled or courageous. The ending is a complete letdown.

It’s these movies that I lose trust in movie review sites like meta critic or rotten tomatos

If rotten tomatoes says 91% you need to keep in mind that means 91% of reviewers felt positive about a movie. They didn't necessarily love it. If you didn't like it that just means you aligned with the 9%. It's not guaranteeing you'll love it, or even like it.

That makes a review site useless though

It's useful if your goal is to find a movie you'll probably like before you head out to the theater. Liking movies is not an exact science. Why do you expect Rotten Tomatoes (or any) site that doesn't collect a bunch of data to be able to know about your personal tastes?

I suppose what is needed is a site that can curate the list of reviews to people who you typically agree with and then provide results from that list for new movies that come out. That requires a lot more work and data from the user. It wouldn't be a passive website experience.

I thought the ending was really good. He lived—and rejected—the antihero narrative that you’re criticizing.

I absolutely loved this movie and felt is was weirdly underrated.

I’ve got large chunks of Tolkien’s translation more or less memorized at this point. I saw 30 seconds of the trailer and knew it was not for me at all.

May i recommend the terry jones audiobook reading instead?

Gawain uses his sword to cut the ropes and free himself.

Then he appears to be running around without the sword.

Why?!

PS. I understand that he is somewhat of a moron, but leaving an excellent weapon behind and running around unarmed goes far beyond common stupidity.
