EXT. SMALL TOWN - DAY

The camera pans over a quiet and peaceful small town, surrounded by fields of crops and rolling hills. The sun beats down on the empty streets and storefronts.

We hear a distant voice calling out from the outskirts of the town. It grows louder as the camera zooms in on two young boys, Ears and Len, who are playing in a field. Ears is hunched over, trying to listen to the sound of the voice.

EARS (calling out) Who's there?

The voice grows closer and we see that it belongs to a man dressed in strange clothing, with a strange device strapped to his back. The man approaches the boys with a friendly smile.

MAN Hello there, boys. I'm looking for a place to stay. Can you help me?

LEN (looking skeptical) What kind of place are you looking for?

MAN (smiling) Anywhere that's warm and dry. I've been traveling for a long time and I'm tired of sleeping on the ground.

EARS We have a guest room at our house. You can stay with us.

The man's face lights up with gratitude.

MAN Thank you, boys. That's very kind of you. My name is John Thurston. What are your names?

EARS I'm Ears and he's Len.

The man follows the boys as they lead him to their home on the outskirts of town.

As they walk, we see that the man's strange device is a Geiger counter, used to measure radiation levels. We also see that the town is surrounded by a high fence, with guards posted at the entrance.

This is a world that has been devastated by nuclear war, and the town is one of the few remaining communities struggling to survive in a new and dangerous world.
