What would make this statue inappropriate versus the bible itself?
A lack of modesty, I imagine. Adam and Eve had the decency to cover themselves with fig leaves at least.

Business idea! I have a fig tree in my backyard, and will happily ship a few leaves anywhere in the country so people can tape them to marble statues. Free roll of tape with every purchase!

The sculpture really represents Florence's attitude towards Rome, and would have been a powerful form of propaganda for the state.
