"Apart from Patrick Hamilton, there is no other twentieth-century British novelist whose cult reputation has never translated into mainstream recognition."
Seconded! Patrick Hamilton's Twenty-Thousand Streets Under The Sky is an absolute masterpiece.
Two new writers to read! Interesting, if it’s really the case, that there are only a couple of twentieth-century British novelists whose cult reputations outstrip their wider reputations. I feel like there are a number of American authors who fit that description, e.g., John Barth, William Gaddis.
