Why are “news” sites allergic to linking to the stuff they’re talking about?
So that you stay on the site and read more articles, of course.
Is CBS on some kind of promotional kick / rejuvenation?
Usually all the links within the article are interlinks. External links, if any, would be provided at the bottom of the article. In this very case they didn't provide any to Blockbuster unfortunately, just a source link which is from Reddit.
Often, the search engines are smart enough to detect this behavior and not rank it too highly. But in a lot of cases, this entity detection and link adding is automated, and so these sites can end up with hundreds of thousands of internal pages (one for any entity they've published articles about) and inevitably some of them will rank. And even if they don't, they've at least given the search engines a sort of hub and spoke pattern to crawl that topic on their site.
So you don't cut them out of your information loop or worse attempt to validate whatever they're feeding you.
There are news sources which cite primary sources, but few and far in between.
I know how absurd that sounds but have you seen the thing screenwriters still use? (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Draft_(software)) it's like typewriter emulation mode for modern computing
As far back as August 2022 they've had this page.
They had a John Travolta meme at one point: https://web.archive.org/web/20221012144701/http://blockbuste...
And a Dennis Nedry (Jurassic Park) reference: https://web.archive.org/web/20220817053845/https://blockbust...
1. Some brilliant person checks blockbuster.com every day or has a script that does and cleverly discovered that the site has content again. What a mystery. I wonder what Blockbuster will be up to next.
2. Dish Network is doing viral marketing and got their site featured on HN, reddit, etc. for free.
I’m not sure a video rental chain like blockbuster _as it was_ could sustainably exist in this day and age, but I bet there’s some fun tangential business vectors a video rental store could incorporate to remain profitable (community events and such immediately come to mind).
For years I'd occasionally take a peek at the domain and there was nothing but promises of something big... but checking today it like they did eventually do something https://circuitcity.com/
Looks like a glorified dropshipping operation playing on nostalgia tbh. I wouldn't expect much more from this.
B&H Photo could've went national direct simply by acquiring that name for ~ $10 megabucks.
It's now dead and folded into TigerDirect.
PS: Retail Ecommerce Ventures is a zombie retail brand collector. They're not doing so well. https://www.retailecommerceventures.com/
"Despite our closing of the physical distribution elements of the business, we continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings." [1]
- does anyone know what digital offering Blockbuster ended up with? any?
the beauty of Blockbuster was actual a social part - I knew each employee and we always chat about movies he recommended. Every employee also happened to know single movie and watched it many times, probably. You could tell these people were movie maniacs. I miss those days. Click on Netflix never-ending list with recommendation of movies from 20 years ago won't do it.
I suspect there's a lot less people nowadays with the capability to play physical media.
