I prefer JEdit to Emacs for a programmable editor, but I mostly just use IntelliJ anyway. JEdit carries the philosophy of Emacs, but the UI isn't stuck in the 70s.
I am really intriuged by this comment over there and also your recommendation:
jEdit is a mature programmer's text editor with hundreds (counting the time developing plugins) of person-years of development behind it.
