Canada is not cutting down trees to meet the US needs, they are cutting down trees because the Canadian government gives the logging and lumber industry subsidies which makes their wood products cheaper than US wood products (in the US) and low quality paper products like toilet paper are largely made with the logging/lumber industry waste that is not useful for anything but the pulp mill. US largely ignores the subsidies (which generally cross the line with regards to our trade deals) until election years since most of the US would rather have cheaper wood products than loggers with well fed families but it sure does feel nice to pretend to care about those loggers and their families once every 4 years unless the economy is doing well and then it is "not in my backyard, fuck big lumber!" This article is playing these same sorts of games, who cares about the cause as long as we have somewhere to point a finger, right?
I really wish conservation could be more than a political reach around but few people actually care. They pat themselves on the back for driving an EV and making an "informed decision" in their purchases but they don't reduce their consumption or waste, they just move the pea under the other shell when no one is looking.
