I don't think the engineer in the OP did a good job. They were the last link in the knowledge chain. It's on them to pass the knowledge along and onboard the newbies.

Is it possible that they got saddled with a bunch of incompetent and lazy new hires? Sure. But by simple numbers it's more likely that the hero was the problem than it is that 4 other people are incompetent beyond help.
