Is there evidence that the CDC (as opposed to the WIV) was doing coronavirus research, let alone research that was closely related to SARS-CoV? The WHO report linked in this thread says that there was no storage or research of related viruses.

Yes that's the key question. There is no clear evidence for this, but there are things like this, from CNN:

In that context, the move and location appear very interesting to me, but it seems I haven't convinced anyone else yet ;)

Garbage in, garbage out. That paper assumes that the case data made available was a complete and unbiased sample of actual Covid cases in Wuhan as of Dec. 2019. There are many good reasons to suspect that wasn't the case.
