Ask HN: Will Bing chat save Bing?

I just got access to bing chat, and they asked me to also download Edge. I downloaded it but I'm so reluctant to have anything microsoft in my life (except VSCode), that somehow I'm willing to tolerate Google over them.

Last time I had to setup a Windows PC, and could not do it without setting up a microsoft account (no more offline account setups). This made me double down on my microsoft rejection som much that I'm afraid to start depending on anything they make because I know how they'd make me a hostage. Comparatively, I'm not a Google hostage. I know that because I migrated my company off of G-suite when they started charging.

I'm a bit of a Chrome hostage, but only due to laziness (Issues setting up Brave sync, and some missing FF extensions), but with MSFT, all bets would be off.

Does anyone feel that way, and does Bing Chat represent any real advantage for MSFT over Google?

A lot of people live in a Mac bubble. Apple is on a tear lately, but macs have a 10% market share globally and 17% in the US.

For years though I have been mainly a windows user but I learned to pack an appropriate set of connectors when I go visit startups, tech meetups, and such because frequently places like that have nothing but mini displayport cables to connect to monitors because I’m the first Windows user to show up in years.

(Who knows how many startups fail because they feel compelled to develop for a platform that has a minority of users?)

At the moment I don't see it as big advantage, but one must admit that new Edge is better than IE (I mean, it is Chromium based). And not they are releasing Bing with AI for computers (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34979251). So I think that people will get used to it. And then they will expect such features/behavior all around.

Not many people worry about vendor lock-ins. Especially not Windows users.

So, Bing chat will for sure help Bing and maybe Edge and Bing will be used for more that going to Google and downloading Chrome.

The interesting question here is how much market share will Bing take from Google Search with the existence of Bing Chat.

They probably raised a fair amount (That they even raised their search API costs by an astronomical level), but if Bard ends up better, I believe it can easily return to how it was before. It's not that hard to be better with Bing Chat having message limitations and whatnot.

I just freshly reimaged a Surface with a Windows 11 ISO that had no drivers for the Surface, so I had no wifi during setup... an offline account is definitely still possible.

The Windows 11 Settings UI does everything it can to hide it from you. But you can use the old "Local Users and Groups" applet to manage them. (Run the condescendingly named "lusrmgr.msc"...)

Microsoft will be fine regardless.

Not even VR/AR can substitute laptops and desktops. And they are dominant in the sector.

Big screens and local computing aren’t going anywhere.
