Yep, shared flats with housemates for over a decade myself. People's expectations are unreal.
So she had to pay off student loans on her salary, not seeing what the issue is here? She already spent money she didn't have, so now she's paying it back. Her rent isn't crazy either, it's rather normal for most cities. The big factor is her student loan debts.
