I dunno if its still the case, but AV1 used to be about the same bitrate as the VP9 streams, effectively making them higher quality streams.

Another experiment I have done: download the AV1 and AVC streams, and average them with VapourSynth.

I've been using 720p for almost a decade. I find it fascinating this meme of pixel density overall, confusing.

Same, I find it takes a 100 inch plus projector before I see the difference between 720p and 1080p, at least for movies.

I’m not trying to be dismissive, but this viewpoint has always been strange for me. for me it is brutally obvious whenever the video has been compressed or downsized. I download most movies at 2k+ resolution because of this. I’m curious what your setup is—perhaps it’s in the way different monitors work?

Projectors sometimes create as a side effect a soft anti-aliasing thanks to the blurriness of the reflection, that makes them look a lot less pixelated than their native resolution, similar to a CRT.

It's an optical illusion that if you don't care about recovering details, the image feels that "looks" better than an image of similar resolution in a LCD.

This, and viewing distance. 110 inches of screen at 1080p is retina resolution at 15 feet, which is about where I am.

I use projectors only. I've go maybe 80" real estate and it's just unnecessary to see anymore details.

why doesn't the industry use some better descriptor than pixel resolution? wouldn't bitrate per pixel or something like that be more useful?

Yes, but the point of this info is to sound impressive, not be useful. Similar to when phones used to endlessly tout megapixels, as if that was the entire equation.
