A lovely paper by Jeremy Gibbons emphasizing the role of associativity in applications of CPS and defunctionalization. It is very readable and proceeds smoothly in increasing order of complexity.

I found this paper on mathstodon, linked by its author, while looking for information on the subtleties of associativity for some constructions and program verification in Lean.

I forget which one, but there's an EWD in which associativity is broken down as commutativity of partial applications:

    x § (y § z) == (x § y) § z
