More context:
I'm gravitating to data rather than straight-up Python because I assume a dev needs to have multiple languages under their belt. I think with my background in using and hacking around data sources it's a much lower bar for me to learn AWS, SQL, and whatever other tools are used by data engineers than to pick up a second dev language.
I should note that though losing a salary is never pleasant, my partner and I will be able to get by without dipping into savings. So though not ideal, should I fail the PIP I would have some leeway to take formal classes and retrain for a few months. And the only jobs in my actual PhD field available in my location are sales. I'm not ready for that move :p
