2. ID cards would be great in the UK, for consistency. Different places now want different type of ids (usually driving licence or passport) plus something else to prove your address (no, the one mentioned on the driving licence is not good enough).
The issue with this when Blair first tried it was he wanted everything on a central database with all the details stored there. This was opposed by many, including the Open Rights Group and NO2ID.
