I wish systemd-boot had implemented a BIOS shim somehow, since we're still stuck with grub for most cloud providers and other non-UEFI capable setups. Basically something that BIOS boots into a UEFI loader-esque so it uses the same path for everything, similar to how ARM can "UEFI boot".
