Was this recently? I think that in modern browsers that has come to be locked down. I'm not fresh on the details, but the gist of it is that a given web page can publish a header which tells the browser what to do when users navigate away from that page. Whether to reveal that page as the origin or not.
I think HN can make it impossible for a site to know that a visitor "came from" HN.
