Very likely everyone in the industry assumed PET based tape was inert because of some old reference-manual/paper/textbook from decades ago that claimed it was in some limited range of environmental conditions, and no one bothered to really check or question it later.

Which raises the interesting question of how much low-hanging fruit there is in everything else?

So if PET is not inert because it releases phthalates, is it safe for storing beverages intended for long-term regular consumption?

Depends on your definition of 'safe'.

Any known plastic will release some non-zero amount of matter into the liquid. The difference is in how much more than zero.

That doesn't really answer the OP's question though. I'm kinda curious too now. I already heard that it's very bad to reuse PET bottles. I wonder if this is why.

Polypropylene tubing is used in place of PVC (PET, not PVC was referenced in the article) when venting LNG/LP for a similar reason. It can handle the higher temperatures.
