Belchentunnel (Switzerland) – Project Film

Note this tunnel is a "sanierungstunnel", although there will be 6 lanes, only 4 as before will be permitted for use as an expansion of capacity is not wanted.

It would have required over 1000 days to service the existing tunnels and cause large delays during this time. It was determined that this would not be economically acceptable to have such traffic delays for that long so a service tunnel was dug.

The old center tunnel will only be used for emergencies after renovation and future reroutes when repairs are needed in the other two tunnels.

The project should complete in 2033 and costs around CHF 500 million.
