GoldenEye 007: the beloved classic that reshaped video games

I thought it was ok on the N64. I think other Rare (Ultimate in my mind) games were much better.

Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Banjo Kazooie been examples. Not forgetting Diddy Kong Racing.

GoldenEye came out when the PC FPS games were much more entertaining. They were online.

I am a big fan of the long tails that certain video games or tech products have. You accrue little tidbits about the development process and such over time. I have Goldeneye rigged up on the monitor in my office and play it from time to time. Motion sickness aside, it holds up pretty well. Statues was a pretty obnoxious level, because nothing obvious tells you that you need to put your guns away when you find the flight recorder, lest the goons near the gate kill Natasha. Statues was also meant to be a multiplayer map, but the fog effect could not be rendered in multiplayer without slowing the game down.

Goldeneye was re-released to Switch and Xbox today. It has revamped controls, refresh rate, and resolution. I’ve yet to give it a try, but if you have Xbox’s game pass, it’s gratis. Switch apparently requires some kind of expansion pack.

I’m excited to see this out. If Switch can support it, hopefully Xbox can also arrange online multiplayer at some point.

Just because author had beloved memories of a game doesn’t mean it “reshaped video games”. Nothing in 007 is truly novel.

One of the few videogames based on a movie that does not suck. Great memories.
