Ask HN: Are desktop applications still viable for a startup?

Is it still possible to build and sell desktop applications and make a living compared to building a SAAS web app?

Might be tough as a startup but healthcare and manufacturing are still using plenty of desktop applications.

Yes.

Do you have any examples of successful desktop apps? Do they put them on Microsoft's or Apple's stores or they're downloaded from their own websites?
